How does device discovery work with the PCoIP Management Console 2.x and 3.x?
The PCoIP Management Console must discover all of the PCoIP devices that it manages and therefore supports the discovery of devices using three mechanisms:
- DHCP Option discovery
- DNS
- DNS Service Record Discovery
- DNS-Based Discovery Prefix
- Manual Discovery
- Configuring an Endpoint Manager Manually from an Endpoint
- Discovering Endpoints Manually from PCoIP Management Console
Mechanism 1 (recommended): DHCP Device Discovery
With this method, PCoIP devices advertise themselves to the PCoIP Management Console. Devices that use the DHCP server can find the PCoIP Management Console. This option requires a DHCP server in the network that is properly configured for option discovery with a PCoIP vendor class.
Mechanism 2 (recommended alternative to DHCP vendor class): DNS Service Record Discovery
With this method, PCoIP devices advertise themselves to the PCoIP Management Console. All devices that use the DNS server
can find the PCoIP Management Console. This mechanism requires a DNS Server on the network with a DNS SRV service record installed. PCoIP devices must enable DHCP to get the domain name and hostname and the the DHCP server must support options for hostname and or domain name.
Mechanism 3: PCoIP Management Console DNS-Based Discovery Prefix
Each PCoIP device reads the PCoIP Management Console DNS-Based Discovery Prefix setting when it boots. If this setting is non-blank then the device attempts to contact the Management Console by combining the string stored in this setting with variations of the domain name hierarchy.
This mechanism requires the following:
- The PCoIP devices and PCoIP Management Console must be located within the same domain name hierarchy tree.
- PCoIP devices must enable DHCP in order to get the domain name and hostname.
- The DHCP server must support options for hostname and or domain name.
- PCoIP devices must have their PCoIP Management Based Discovery Prefix setting set equal to the PCoIP Management Console's hostname.
Mechanism 4: Manual Device Discovery
With the Manual Device Discovery mechanism, the PCoIP Management Console only discovers devices when commanded to do so. The PCoIP Management Console can discover devices at a specific IP address, a range of IP addresses or at a fully qualified domain name. This mechanism is useful for users who want to quickly begin using the PCoIP Management Console.
Note: Further information can be found on this topic in the PCoIP Management Console Administrators' Guide.
